How We First Met: Kathy and Mark

Kathy and Mark

Mark, 36 and never married, was sick and tired of the dating scene. He wanted to do something different, something cultural and soulful. So he decided to take harpsichord lessons, and learn to play Bach and other such music. He called Kathy, 33, a professional musician and teacher, who gave harpsichord lessons in her home in a commune in the Haight. When she answered the door, dressed in purple tights and a blue patchwork dress. She was smoking a roll-your-own cigarette, Mark, assuming the teacher would be older, said, "Is your mother, the teacher, home?" "No," replied Kathy, "I'm the teacher!" Wow! That lesson went on for a couple of hours, and led to a lot of energetic practicing to try and please the teacher. One thing led to another, and we started going out to dinner after the lessons. Three months later we moved in together, and got married after another year. We're still together, have two kids in their 20s, and this Valentine's day are celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary. (The picture is at the Grand Canyon, a few months ago).
